background: in 1870, alain abadie was sent as a french diplomat to japan to navigate the newly established trading routes to the west. here he met and fell in love with the young aristocrat's daughter, yuriko ayakura and decided to bring her with him back to france when his stay was over. when that time came, five years later, yuriko and he had already had a child, a young daughter by the name of hoshiko and she, too, travelled with them to europe where the family settled in a village just outside paris. not long after that, yuriko gave birth to a son whom she named kiyoaki, but alain insisted he had to bear a proper french name, charles. yuriko felt foreign and unwanted in france where she could hardly move freely around the city and as a consequence, grew increasingly frailer and more sickly. homesickness, she called it. this was the mother hoshiko grew up with and this was the tale she was told, that japan had been everything france wasn't and her mother would do anything to see it again one more time before she died. her mother's longing became her own and as such, she became a young woman who took all she knew and didn't know about her country of birth and poured her hopes into that. she would soon start showing great talent as an artist and was accepted into the academy of painting and sculpture where she worked in the impressionistic style, but with japonistic aesthetics. it was her way to bridge the distance between where she came from and where she was now.
